Letting Go of “Shoulds”: How to Rewrite Your Midlife Story With Freedom and Joy

Hello and welcome to the Midlife Made Easier blog, a supportive space where midlife women prioritize their healing, reclaim their power, and build a life they love. Here, we shine a light on the unique health challenges women face in midlife, particularly those related to menopause, heart health, and high blood pressure, offering compassionate guidance, practical strategies, and inspiration to help you thrive, not just survive. This is your place to take charge of your well-being, find your voice, and feel seen, supported, and strong.

Before we dive in, I’d like to share our complimentary guide, The Midlife Reboot Workbook. If you’re ready to reclaim your spark, wake up excited again, and reconnect with your purpose, this workbook will give you the tools to start fresh.

The Weight of “Should”

One of the things that can haunt us in midlife is the endless list of “shoulds.”

  • Should I switch careers?

  • Should I stay in this relationship?

  • Maybe I should keep quiet instead of speaking up.

The list goes on. These thoughts become exhausting and paralyzing when piled onto everything else: the laundry list of things you need to do, want to do, or desperately wish you could do but can’t. Before you know it, the “shoulds” are running your life instead of you.

What Happens If We Don’t Let Go

Holding on to “shoulds” keeps us:

  • Stuck in indecision, unable to move forward because we’re waiting for the “perfect” choice.

  • Trapped in guilt, carrying the weight of obligations that aren’t truly ours.

  • Disconnected from ourselves, because we lose sight of what we actually want in the noise of expectations.

Over time, “shoulds” chip away at our energy, confidence, and joy. They keep us living someone else’s story instead of writing our own.

A Story of Letting Go

I once worked with a woman named Karen who was weary from years of “shoulds.” She said, “I should be further along in my career. I should be happy in my marriage. I should be eating better. I should be exercising more.”

She was exhausted. None of those “shoulds” actually came from her; they were echoes of family expectations, society’s messages about what midlife “should” look like, and her own inner critic.

The day Karen began asking herself, “What do I want?” instead of “What should I do?” was a turning point. She left the volunteer commitments that drained her, started painting again (something she loved in her 20s), and found joy in small daily choices that reflected who she really was.

Her life didn’t magically transform overnight, but her perspective did. She was no longer trapped by “shoulds.” She was free to build a life she actually loved.

Why Letting Go Is a Gift

When you release the grip of “should,” you give yourself permission to:

  • Live with authenticity instead of comparison.

  • Choose with clarity instead of guilt.

  • Embrace joy in small, everyday moments.

Letting go of “shoulds” is not about being reckless; it’s about choosing freedom, alignment, and peace in midlife.

You’ve Got This

Your life story doesn’t have to be dictated by “shoulds.” It can be rewritten with choice, authenticity, and love. The first step? Start paying attention to which thoughts are truly your own and which ones are borrowed expectations. Then, let go of what no longer serves you.

Well, that is all I have for you today, my friend. Please share this post with someone you love. Let us know in the comments: What is one “should” you’re ready to let go of today?

Welcome to Day 1 of the Midlife Reset Challenge: Your Comeback Starts Now

Listen to the First Episode of the Midlife Made Easier Podcast: Day 1 – Midlife Reset: Why This Isn’t a Crisis—It’s Your Comeback

Hello, beautiful friend, and welcome!

I am thrilled you’re here for Day 1 of the Midlife Reset Challenge at Midlife Made Easier. Over the next 10 days, we will walk together about reclaiming your joy, reviving your confidence, and reigniting your energy.

If you’ve been feeling a little blah lately, maybe even invisible or stuck on autopilot, this is your invitation to pause, breathe, and remember that midlife isn’t the end of anything.

It’s the beginning of everything.

Why I Created This Challenge

I wrote The Midlife Reset: 21 Days to Reignite Your Energy, Confidence, & Joy for three deeply personal reasons:

  1. I was done with the “midlife crisis” narrative.
Let’s face it—midlife does come with change. But instead of a crisis, I began to see it as a chance to reset, reimagine, and refocus on me for the first time in decades. That shift was powerful.
  2. So many of you were asking, “What’s next?”
After years of caregiving, career juggling, and putting others first, many of us feel disconnected from our purpose. This challenge is your space to ask big questions and craft new answers.
  3. I wanted to offer something practical and doable.
It’s not another overwhelming 300-page guide but a clear, heartfelt blueprint you can use starting now.

Midlife is not a time to shrink. It’s a time to expand, explore, grow, and rediscover what lights you up.
And let’s be honest: midlife women are strong, resourceful, and wildly capable—but we are also among the most overlooked in wellness, healthcare, and media.
That ends here.

What You Can Expect This Week

Each day, you’ll get a new blog post full of real talk, encouragement, and tools to help you feel more energized and empowered. Whether you’re entering your 40s, 50s, or 60s—this is your reset. Your space. Your comeback.

Midlife isn’t a crisis. It’s a pivotal point. And you’re allowed to pivot boldly.

Today’s Reset Reflection

Take a few quiet moments and ask yourself:

What made me say “yes” to this challenge? What am I ready to release—and what am I prepared to reclaim?

Jot your answers in a journal, your workbook, or in the comments. We’d love to hear from you.

How Much Protein Does a Woman in Midlife Need?

Protein is one of the most essential nutrients for maintaining muscle, supporting metabolism, and keeping energy levels steady—especially for women in midlife. As we age, our bodies lose muscle mass, leading to slower metabolism, weight gain, and increased risk of falls or injury.

But how much protein do you need? And what happens if you get too much—or not enough? Let’s break it down.

What is Protein and What Does It Do?

Protein comprises amino acids, the building blocks for nearly every function in your body. It helps:

✅ Build and repair muscles
✅ Support a healthy immune system
✅ Maintain skin, hair, and nails
✅ Keep hormones balanced
✅ Promote a healthy metabolism

For midlife women, getting enough protein is key to maintaining strength, preventing muscle loss, and supporting overall health.

How Much Protein Do You Need in Midlife?

The general recommendation for protein intake is 0.8 grams per kilogram (or 0.36 grams per pound) of body weight per day. However, many experts suggest that midlife women need more—closer to 1.2 to 2.0 grams per kilogram (0.54 to 0.9 grams per pound) to support muscle maintenance and overall health.

For example:

  • A 150-pound (68 kg) woman may need 80–100 grams of protein daily for optimal health.
  • A 130-pound (59 kg) woman may aim for 70–90 grams daily.

Your exact needs depend on factors like activity level, muscle mass, and overall health goals.

What Happens If You Don’t Get Enough Protein?

If you’re not getting enough protein, you may experience:
⚠️ Muscle loss and weakness
⚠️ Slower metabolism and weight gain
⚠️ Brittle hair, nails, and dry skin
⚠️ Increased cravings and unstable blood sugar
⚠️ Poor recovery from workouts or injuries

Can You Have Too Much Protein?

While protein is essential, excessive intake can lead to:
⚠️ Digestive discomfort (bloating, constipation)
⚠️ Kidney strain (if you have pre-existing kidney conditions)
⚠️ Nutrient imbalances if protein replaces key carbs and healthy fats

The key is balance—enough protein to support your body, but not so much that it crowds out other essential nutrients.

Protein-Rich Foods for Midlife Women

Looking for protein-rich meal ideas? Here are some great options:
🥚 Eggs & Greek yogurt
🥩 Lean meats (chicken, turkey, fish)
🌱 Plant-based proteins (tofu, lentils, chickpeas)
🥜 Nuts, seeds, and nut butter
🧀 Cheese and cottage cheese

How to Live on Less and Still Buy the Good Toilet Paper

For 2025, my goal is simple: live on less than I make while still enjoying a fantastic life. I’m not giving up my mani-pedis, massages, or getting my hair done every two weeks—those are non-negotiables. But I’ve realized there are other areas where I can cut expenses without sacrificing joy.

Why I’m Doing This

Two big reasons:

  1. I want to quit my full-time job by the end of the year to work on my business full-time.
  2. I want to retire comfortably while traveling, having fun, and living on my own terms.

This journey has also opened my eyes to something deeper: my relationship with money. Even at 64, I’m learning that financial healing is possible. And if I can do it, so can you.

How I’m Cutting Costs (Without Sacrificing Joy)

1. Dining In More Often

I love eating out, but cooking at home saves so much money. I’m planning meals and experimenting with delicious, healthy meals that excite me to eat at home.

2. Reevaluating Subscriptions

I reexamined my streaming services, memberships, and apps. Do I need them all? Nope. I kept the ones I used and canceled the rest.

3. Smart Grocery Shopping

Buying in bulk, shopping sales, and using cashback apps are easy ways to save. And yes, I still buy good toilet paper—because some things in life are worth it.

4. Prioritizing Experiences Over Things

Instead of impulse shopping, I’m focusing on experiences that bring me joy—like road trips, spending time with loved ones, and investing in my personal growth.

5. Finding Creative Ways to Save

From using reward points to negotiating better service deals, I’m becoming more mindful of where my money goes.

This journey isn’t about deprivation—it’s about intentional spending. It’s about spending in ways that align with my values and long-term goals. If you want to live well while spending less, I hope this blog inspires you.

Until next time, take care of yourself and each other. And don’t forget to check out the resources below for more money-saving tips!

Do Your Skincare Products Have to Come from the Same Skincare Line?

Hello, friends! Welcome back to the Midlife Made Easier blog, where we are on a mission to help midlife women put their healing first.

When it comes to skincare, one of the most common questions I hear is: Do all my products need to be from the same brand? The short answer? No! But let’s dive a little deeper into why that is—and how you can build an effective routine that works for your skin.

The Myth of Sticking to One Brand

Many skincare companies market their products as being most effective when used together. While there’s some truth to the idea that formulations from the same line are designed to complement each other, that doesn’t mean mixing and matching is terrible. Choosing products based on ingredients rather than brand names can yield better results.

The Key to an Effective Skincare Routine

Instead of focusing on brand loyalty, consider these factors when building your skincare routine:

1. Know Your Skin Type

Are you dealing with dryness, oiliness, sensitivity, or combination skin? Understanding your skin’s needs will help you choose the right products, regardless of brand.

2. Look for Complementary Ingredients

  • Hyaluronic Acid + Ceramides: Great for hydration and skin barrier support.
  • Vitamin C + SPF: A powerful duo for brightening and protecting against sun damage.
  • Retinol + Peptides: Ideal for smoothing fine lines and boosting collagen.

3. Avoid Harmful Ingredient Combinations

Some ingredients don’t play well together, no matter the brand:

  • Retinol + Benzoyl Peroxide: Can cause excessive dryness and irritation.
  • Vitamin C + AHAs/BHAs: May lead to increased sensitivity.
  • Niacinamide + Vitamin C: They can cancel each other out if not formulated correctly.

4. Patch Test New Products

Always do a patch test before applying a new product to your entire face, whether using one brand or multiple. This helps prevent irritation or allergic reactions.

5. Listen to Your Skin

If a product isn’t working for you—whether it’s part of a full skincare system or a standalone purchase—don’t force it. Your skin will tell you what it needs!

The Bottom Line

Your skincare routine should be about what works, not what’s marketed to you. Mixing and matching brands is fine if the ingredients support your skin’s health and goals.

I hope this post helps you feel more confident in creating a skincare routine that works for you. Share this blog post with someone you love, and until next time, take care of yourself and each other.

How to Stop People-Pleasing and Why It’s Ruining Your Life

I was a people-pleaser. I didn’t want people to be sad. I didn’t want them to think badly of themselves. That, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. But I did it at the expense of my wants, needs, and sanity.

It took me years to get over people-pleasing. I would let folks be right even when what they were saying was definitely wrong. I stayed in relationships long past their expiration date. I belittled myself and made myself small so others could feel better about themselves. But in the process, I lost myself. It left me feeling sad, empty, and unaccomplished.

If this sounds familiar, know you’re not alone and can break free. Let’s discuss why people-pleasing is ruining your life and how to stop it.

Why People-Pleasing is Hurting You

  1. It Drains Your Energy – You spend so much time ensuring others are happy that you neglect your needs.
  2. It Leads to Resentment – Over time, constantly saying “yes” to things you don’t want to do builds frustration and bitterness.
  3. You Lose Your Authentic Self – When you focus on meeting others’ expectations, you might forget what makes you happy.
  4. It Keeps You Stuck – When you’re always worried about others think, you may hesitate to take risks, set boundaries, or make changes that could improve your life.

How to Stop People-Pleasing

  1. Recognize the Pattern – The first step is acknowledging that you tend to put others’ needs before your own. Pay attention when you say “yes” out of guilt or fear rather than genuine desire.
  2. Practice Saying “No” – This can feel uncomfortable at first, but saying “no” doesn’t make you selfish—it makes you honest. Try responses like, “I’d love to help, but I don’t have the time right now.”
  3. Set Boundaries – You don’t have to be available to everyone 24/7. Start setting limits on your time, energy, and commitments.
  4. Prioritize Yourself – Ask yourself, What do I want? What do I need? Then, start making decisions based on your happiness and well-being.
  5. Let Go of Guilt—Saying “no” doesn’t make you a bad person. It makes you a person who respects yourself.

Breaking free from people-pleasing isn’t easy, but it’s one of the most important things you can do for yourself. You deserve to live a life that reflects your values, dreams, and happiness, not one dictated by the expectations of others. When you start setting boundaries, prioritizing your needs, and letting go of guilt, you reclaim your power and achieve confidence and fulfillment. Remember, you are worthy just as you are. So, take that first step—choose yourself t

Rediscover Your Passions: A Journey to Reignite Your Joy

Midlife is the perfect time to reconnect with what lights you up—your passions. Over the years, it’s easy to put your dreams and hobbies on hold while caring for others or handling life’s demands. But now, it’s your turn. Rediscovering your passions not only brings joy but can also ignite a renewed sense of purpose.

Maybe it’s been years since you picked up a paintbrush or dusted off your guitar. Or perhaps you’ve always dreamed of trying something new, like photography or writing. Midlife is the ideal time to explore those interests—old favorites or fresh pursuits.

Why Rediscovering Your Passions Matters

Engaging in activities that bring us joy makes us feel more fulfilled, energized, and connected to our true selves. Rediscovering passions can also lead to personal growth, boost self-esteem, and create new opportunities. And guess what? It’s not about being perfect or “good enough” at something—it’s about the process and the joy of creating something meaningful.

Taking the time to tap into your creative side or revisit past hobbies can lead to new friends, a sense of accomplishment, and a deeper understanding of yourself. These passions offer a healthy escape from everyday stress and can be therapeutic.

How to Get Started

  • Start small—whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro doesn’t matter. Take it one step at a time.
  • Make it a priority to schedule time for these activities, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day.
  • Be patient with yourself. Rediscovering your passions is a journey, not a race.

Rediscovering your passions is not just about filling your time—it’s about filling your life with purpose, joy, and inspiration. It’s a reminder that there’s always room for growth and exploration at any stage of life.

Menopause and Heart Disease: What Women Need to Know

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycle. It typically occurs in women in their late 40s or early 50s, signaling the end of their reproductive years. While menopause is a normal part of aging, it can bring about various changes in the body, including an increased risk of heart disease.

The Link Between Menopause and Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, surpassing all forms of cancer combined. The risk of heart disease increases with age, and menopause seems to play a significant role in this increased risk.

During menopause, a woman’s body undergoes hormonal changes, particularly a decline in estrogen levels. Estrogen is believed to have a protective effect on the cardiovascular system, helping to maintain healthy blood vessels and lower cholesterol levels. As estrogen levels decrease during menopause, women become more susceptible to heart disease.

Understanding the Risks

Several factors contribute to the increased risk of heart disease in menopausal women:

  1. Changes in Cholesterol Levels: During menopause, there is often a shift in cholesterol levels, with an increase in LDL cholesterol (frequently referred to as “bad” cholesterol) and a decrease in HDL cholesterol (known as “good” cholesterol). This imbalance can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
  2. Weight Gain: Many women experience weight gain during menopause, particularly around the abdomen. Excess abdominal fat is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and other health issues.
  3. Increased Blood Pressure: Menopause can also lead to increased blood pressure, a significant risk factor for heart disease.
  4. Loss of Estrogen’s Protective Effects: Estrogen helps to relax blood vessels and maintain their elasticity. As estrogen levels decline during menopause, blood vessels may become stiffer, increasing the risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular issues.

Tips for Heart Health During Menopause

While menopause is a natural process that cannot be avoided, there are steps women can take to reduce their risk of heart disease:

  1. Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet: Focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol.
  2. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Aim for a healthy weight and waist circumference. Losing excess weight can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
  3. Stay Active: Regular physical activity is crucial for heart health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week.
  4. Quit Smoking: Smoking is a significant risk factor for heart disease. If you smoke, seek help to quit.
  5. Manage Stress: Chronic stress can contribute to heart disease. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as meditation, yoga, or talking to a therapist.
  6. Get Regular Check-Ups: Regular visits to your healthcare provider can help monitor your heart health and catch any issues early.

Menopause is a natural stage of life, but women need to be aware of the increased risk of heart disease that comes with it. By taking proactive steps to maintain a healthy lifestyle, women can reduce their risk and enjoy a healthier, heart-healthy future. Awareness and education are crucial; understanding the changes happening in your body can empower you to make informed health decisions.

Remember, heart health is a lifelong journey. Stay informed, active, and connected with your healthcare provider to keep your heart in shape.
