Growing up, scarcity wasn’t just a mindset but a reality. There was never enough food, money, or heat to warm up our cramped little house. My mom did her best, working tirelessly for $90 a week at a dry cleaner, trying to keep her three kids fed, clothed, and sheltered. But the constant struggle left a deep imprint on me.
Because of this upbringing, I always worried about not having enough. I’d hold onto things out of fear of needing them one day. Once, I received a $100 gift card after switching my internet service. Instead of using it, I put it away, thinking, What if I need it later for gas or food or…something? I clung to that “just in case” mindset.
But do you know what happened? The gift card expired.
I was frustrated and disappointed when I realized it was no longer valid. But more than that, I had an epiphany: living in scarcity cost me more than it was helping me. By trying to save something for the future, I had missed the opportunity to use it when it mattered. That moment was a turning point. I knew I couldn’t live in lack anymore. I had to move my mindset to one of abundance.
How I Shifted from Scarcity to Abundance
1. I Focused on Gratitude.
Every day, I started listing three things I was grateful for, no matter how small. Gratitude shifted my focus from what I lacked to what I already had.
2. I Learned to Trust Myself.
Living in scarcity had taught me to fear the future. I had to remind myself that I was resourceful and capable. I’ve faced challenges before, and I can handle whatever comes next.
3. I Allowed Myself to Enjoy the Present.
Instead of hoarding resources out of fear, I embraced the idea that what I need will come to me when needed. That meant using my gift cards, eating the “special occasion” foods, and enjoying what I had right now.
4. I Rewrote My Story.
Growing up, my narrative was that there was never enough. But I’ve worked to replace that with, “I have everything I need, and more is always coming.” It’s not just a mantra but a belief I nurture daily.
5. I Created a Vision for Abundance.
Scarcity keeps you stuck in survival mode. I shifted my energy by visualizing what an abundant life looks like: freedom, joy, generosity, and peace. I took small steps toward making it a reality.
