I divorced my children’s father over twenty years ago, yet I still haven’t quite gotten used to spending most, if not all, of the holidays alone. After the divorce, we split the holidays, and now that my kids are grown, they’ve continued to follow this schedule. While it’s not always easy, I’ve discovered a few strategies over the years that have made solo holidays more enjoyable and meaningful. In this blog, I’m sharing the tips that have helped me the most—I hope they’ll inspire you to embrace the season, even if you’re spending it on your own.

For many, the holiday season is a time filled with family gatherings, social events, and joyful reunions. But what if your holiday looks different this year? Whether by choice or circumstance, spending the holidays alone as a midlife woman can be a beautiful, fulfilling experience with the right mindset and a few thoughtful activities. Here’s how to make your solo holiday season a time of self-discovery, joy, and peace.

1. Embrace the Freedom

One of the best parts of spending the holidays alone is the freedom to spend the day exactly as you like. With no obligations or expectations, you have complete control over how you want to celebrate. This could mean a relaxing day at home in your pajamas, binge-watching your favorite shows, cooking a feast just for yourself, or even going on a quiet nature walk.

2. Create New Traditions Just for You

The holidays are the perfect opportunity to start your own personal traditions. Whether it’s watching a specific movie, enjoying a holiday-themed spa day at home, or taking on a new craft project make it something that feels meaningful and enjoyable. Creating new traditions can help make solo holidays feel special, memorable, and uniquely yours.

3. Treat Yourself to Something Special

Gift yourself something you’ve wanted all year. This doesn’t have to be a big-ticket item—it could be a book, a cozy blanket, a luxurious candle, or a self-care kit. Wrapping it up and saving it to open on the holiday can add a fun element of surprise and celebration to your day.

4. Reflect and Set Intentions for the New Year

The holidays are a wonderful time for self-reflection. Take some quiet time to journal about the past year: what you’ve accomplished, what you’ve learned, and what you want for the future. Reflecting on your journey and setting intentions for the new year can bring a sense of purpose and excitement for what’s to come.

5. Connect Virtually or In-Person, If Possible

If you miss social interaction, consider scheduling a virtual get-together with friends or family. Platforms like Zoom or FaceTime make it easy to share a holiday meal or even open gifts together. If it feels right, you could also consider volunteering at a local community event, as giving back can be a powerful way to feel connected and spread holiday cheer.

6. Indulge in Your Favorite Holiday Comforts

Make your environment warm and inviting by decorating it just for you. Light candles, play holiday music and indulge in your favorite seasonal treats. Surrounding yourself with the comforting elements of the season can bring joy and a sense of peace to your solo celebration.

7. Plan for the Day Ahead

Planning how you’ll spend the day can help you look forward to it. Plan meals, decide on activities, and set a schedule that excites you. Knowing what you want to do, whether visiting a nearby museum, watching holiday movies, or trying a new holiday recipe, can keep you focused and give the day a delightful flow.

Spending the holidays alone doesn’t have to feel lonely. By treating it as a time to honor yourself, create meaningful traditions, and indulge in the season’s comforts, you can make this solo holiday a cherished experience. Embrace this time for what it is—a unique opportunity to connect deeply with yourself and enjoy the holiday season on your terms.

With Peace & Love,

Renee
